1846 Louisiana Plantation Now a B&B

No two paths to becoming an innkeeper are the same, as this story shows: The first reservation at Madewood Plantation in Napoleonville, Louisiana, was made before innkeeper Keith Marshall even knew he was an innkeeper. Staring at a larger-than-ever electric bill for the 21-room mansion that was a family home, Marshall received a call from someone asking if they accepted guests.

"Of course we never had," Marshall recently told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I looked down at the bill, and I quickly divided $450 by three. I told him we charged $150 and that we include a candlelit dinner, brandy in the library, breakfast and a tour of the house."
